What to do when you find a possibly lost pet in Nepal

A pet found outside may have a family looking for it. A found pet report helps connect sightings with missing reports, but neither a listing nor a message is proof of ownership. Nepal Pets is a listing platform, not a place to bring or surrender an animal.

Report a found pet

Start with safety and nearby enquiries

Approach only if it is safe for you and the animal. Avoid entering traffic, cornering the pet, or trying to handle an animal that may bite. If the animal appears injured or distressed, contact a nearby veterinary clinic or an animal welfare organization for advice.

If you can safely read a collar tag, use its contact details. Ask nearby residents or shops whether they recognize the pet. A local veterinary clinic may be able to advise whether microchip scanning is available; do not assume every clinic has a scanner.

Record where and when the pet was found

Note the date and location using the district, municipality, ward or tole, and a recognizable landmark where available. Describe the pet accurately and take a clear photo without putting yourself or the animal at risk.

Keep some identifying details private so a claimant can describe them later. Do not publicly post an ID tag's private contact information or the exact address where the pet is temporarily staying.

Publish a found report and look for matches

Choose Found on the Nepal Pets listing form. Include the location, date, photo, and an appropriate contact method. Browse missing pet reports and compare dates, locations, and distinguishing features instead of relying only on a matching breed or color.

Share the report with relevant neighborhood and community groups. Label posters Found pet so they clearly explain the situation. Be clear about whether you are caring for the pet or are reporting a sighting only.

Verify ownership before arranging a handover

Ask the claimant to provide earlier photos, available veterinary records, or identifying details that were not included in your public report. Compare several pieces of information rather than treating one online message as proof.

Agree on a safe handover arrangement. If ownership is disputed, seek appropriate local assistance rather than making promises through the listing. After a successful reunion, contact Nepal Pets to request that the report be marked Reunited and update the groups where it was shared.
